Pets were introduced to GTA Online as part of the A Safehouse in the Hills update — the first time Rockstar has let players properly own a companion in Los Santos. You can get a cat, a dog, or both, and they'll wander around your property, adding some life to what would otherwise be a very expensive, very empty mansion.

Before anything else, you need to own one of the three new mansions in Los Santos. They're listed through the Prix Luxury Real Estate site — open your in-game phone, go to the browser, and look it up.

The three properties are spread across the hills and come at different price points, so browse before you commit. Once you've purchased your mansion, enter the interior at least once to initialise all the amenities — including the pet kennels.

Once you're inside your mansion, head to the main lounge area. You'll find a cat bed sitting on a table — interact with it to open the cat purchase menu.

1. Enter the mansion and go to the main living/lounge area.
2. Find the cat bed on the table and interact with it.
3. Choose your preferred cat breed (colour) from the five available options.
4. Enter a name for your cat when prompted and confirm the purchase.
5. Your cat will immediately start roaming the mansion interior.

To rename your cat later, return to the cat bed, access the menu, and press Y / Triangle / Tab depending on your platform.

Dogs live outside. Head to your mansion's exterior and look around the driveway area for a dog kennel. All three mansions have one in the same general spot.

1. Exit the mansion and walk around the main exterior / driveway area.
2. Find the dog kennel and interact with it.
3. Select "Purchase a dog" from the menu.
4. Choose your preferred breed, then pick a colour variant for that breed.
5. Enter your dog's name and confirm the purchase.
6. Your dog will begin roaming the outdoor grounds immediately.

Can I have both a dog and a cat?

Yes — you can own one of each at the same time. Just purchase them from their respective kennels inside and outside the mansion.

Can I rename my pet after buying?

Absolutely. Interact with the cat bed or dog kennel again, open the menu, and press Y (Xbox) / Triangle (PlayStation) / Tab (PC) to rename or even change the breed and colour.

Do pets work in all mansions if I own more than one?

Your dog and cat are shared across all mansions you own — you can't have a separate pet per property, just one of each total.

Can I lose or harm my pet?

No. Pets are safe and permanent additions to your mansion. There's no care system, no penalties for ignoring them, and no way to lose them.
